The role
GitLab is hiring an Intermediate-Senior Backend Engineer for the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team. The team builds agentic workflows that turn a stated intent into a work item, an implementation plan and mergeable code. It is a small, all-remote team working toward a public beta.
What you will do
- Lead backend features from early product discussions through design, rollout and post-launch learning
- Build the flows, APIs and data models behind agent-generated work items, plans, specifications and code
- Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems measuring workflow quality, token cost and success rate
- Work in Ruby on Rails and Python with PostgreSQL, GraphQL, GitLab Duo Agent Platform and LLM APIs
- Coordinate multi-person projects and mentor other engineers
- Work in short iterations and share progress through demos
What they ask for
- Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase, plus production Python
- Experience driving substantial multi-engineer projects over several months
- Product mindset with end-to-end feature ownership, from scope to post-launch learning
- Full-stack background with a current backend focus, able to read modern frontend code
- Strong API design and SQL fundamentals
- Experience exploring AI-assisted development
- Helpful but optional: GraphQL, PostgreSQL at scale, building or evaluating LLM and agent systems
