The role
Grafana Labs is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for a new team building an AI-native data context system, which gives AI agents governed access to enterprise data and definitions. Remote, for candidates in the US or Canada, excluding Quebec residents.
What you will do
- Design and operate the first services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration and API access
- Build the architecture for a multi-tenant SaaS: tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs and background jobs
- Build APIs that let AI agents, MCP tools and CLIs retrieve context with provenance and confidence signals
- Balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the project moves from prototype to production
- Instrument services with metrics, logs, traces and alerts
- Help set storage choices, API contracts and deployment patterns
What they ask for
- Solid experience building production-grade software systems
- Practical familiarity with AI technologies and frameworks, including LLMs and prompt engineering
- Comfort releasing prototypes, collecting feedback and iterating
- Ability to handle ambiguity and define scope when things are loosely defined
- Good communication across teams
- Based in the US or Canada (not Quebec)
