The role
GitLab is hiring a Senior or Staff Backend Engineer for its Database Excellence group to automate the PostgreSQL lifecycle in Go and build a PostgreSQL-as-a-service platform. Level is set during hiring. The team is fully remote.
What you will do
- Build Go automation for PostgreSQL provisioning, configuration, upgrades, failover, scaling and decommissioning
- Build a PostgreSQL-as-a-service platform to replace bespoke database setups
- Automate major version upgrades at GitLab.com scale, validated against production traffic
- Improve PostgreSQL performance, scalability and data health
- Review database automation and Go changes from other contributors
- Document operational patterns and operate what you build in production
What they ask for
- Professional experience with PostgreSQL in large production environments, including building or operating a database-as-a-service
- Proficiency with Go for backend services
- Experience building Kubernetes operators or similar automation for stateful services, or comparable database automation experience
- Infrastructure as code and database operations concepts: high availability, replication, backups
- Strong written communication in an all-remote, async team
- Self-directed work style
- Ruby familiarity is a plus
