The role
The company is hiring a Director of Software Engineering to lead its Elasticsearch Distributed Systems organisation of about 40 engineers and managers. The group works on scale, performance and resilience, especially for the Serverless offering. The company is a distributed company.
What you will do
- Set and run long-term engineering strategy for Elasticsearch distributed systems
- Improve performance, scalability, reliability and cost, including Serverless foundations
- Lead the evolution of core architecture: cluster coordination, allocation, indexing, replication and recovery
- Guide complex initiatives and architectural decisions across managers and technical leaders
- Hire, mentor and develop engineering managers and senior leaders, and run performance management
- Plan staffing and resources, and act as senior escalation point with Support and SRE
What they ask for
- Track record leading large engineering organisations, including managing managers
- Hands-on software engineering background with depth in distributed systems
- Experience designing or operating large-scale systems, ideally database engines or distributed storage
- Strong grasp of concurrency, consistency, replication, fault tolerance and recovery
- Experience setting engineering strategy and delivering multi-team initiatives
- Strong operational and production troubleshooting experience
- Ability to present strategy to senior executives
