The role
Coinbase is hiring a Senior Staff Technical Risk Architect for its Unified Trading platform, to design and own a real-time cross-asset risk and margin engine for institutional and retail trading. Coinbase is remote-first, with quarterly in-person sessions.
What you will do
- Own the architecture of the real-time cross-asset risk and margin engine, including user and portfolio modeling
- Design low-latency, high-throughput risk systems that stay correct as the platform grows
- Own SLOs, observability and incident response for risk-critical systems
- Set the technical bar through code, design reviews and standards
- Mentor engineers and reduce single points of failure
- Work with Product, Trading, Credit Risk, Security and Compliance on the roadmap
What they ask for
- Hands-on architect who has built and supported 24/7 risk systems handling billions of dollars daily
- Extensive backend experience owning complex distributed production systems
- Architected a cross-asset risk system (crypto, equities, FCM or derivatives) with real-time evaluation at scale
- Deep low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging such as Aeron or SBE
- Experience with multifactor and borrow risk, margin or clearing in regulated financial settings
- Delivered projects end to end, from scoping to monitoring
- Uses generative AI responsibly with human oversight
