These numbers describe our own listings on 26 October 2026, a curated set, not the whole remote job market.

Three kinds of jobs open to South Africa

The 157 jobs fall into three groups.

Jobs open worldwide (100). These accept applicants from any country. On our site they are mostly IT roles (85 of the 100), plus 10 data annotation, 4 AI roles and 1 marketing role. They come from only five employers, and two of them post 88 of the 100. Competition for them is global.

Jobs that name South Africa (47). These come from nine employers, and 38 of them name South Africa as the only country. When a listing names only your country, the employer has usually already decided it can hire and pay people there.

Jobs that hire from Africa (10). These name the region but no country. All ten are IT roles.

The rest of this article looks mainly at the 57 jobs in the last two groups, because they are the ones written with South Africa in mind. They come from 14 employers, and one of them posts 24 of the 57, so the picture can change quickly when one employer fills its roles.

South Africa next to other countries

Only four countries are named in more of our listings: the United States (485), Canada (237), the United Kingdom (86) and the Philippines (83). South Africa (47) shares fifth place with Colombia, ahead of Poland (44), India and Argentina (36 each).

Inside Africa the gap is large. After South Africa come Morocco (4), Algeria and Tunisia (2 each), then Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Cameroon (1 each). The listings do not say why; English at work and hours close to Europe's probably help.

A few of the 47 also name other countries, mostly in Europe and North Africa: Serbia in 3, and Bulgaria, Malta, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Morocco and Tunisia in 2 each.

English leads, named in 16 of the 57. Many more listings are written in English without naming it, so expect your written English to be judged from your first message.

Next come office tools: Google Workspace (8), calendar management (7) and Microsoft 365 (6). Inbox management and email support appear in 5 each, and so do Zendesk and CRM tools. These point to assistant and support roles, where you keep someone's day or someone's customers in order.

The technical skills come from the IT roles: Python (7), then AWS, SQL, Linux, React and Kubernetes (6 each), and Go and JavaScript (5 each). Email marketing (6) and Google Ads (3) come from the marketing roles. For a broader view across all fields, see the skills remote employers ask for.

How much experience you need

Most of these jobs are mid level: 32 of the 57. Eighteen are senior, three are leads and four are entry level. Across all 157 jobs open to South Africa, eight are entry level.

Of the 57, 21 state a number of years. Two ask for one year, four for three years and four for four years. Eight ask for five years and three for seven, mostly in IT.

If you are starting out, the four entry-level roles are in customer service (2), data entry (1) and data annotation (1). Otherwise, aim for mid-level support and admin roles and count experience that was not remote: a call centre, front-desk work or office admin can all be relevant if you describe results, such as tickets closed, diaries managed or tools used. Our article on standing out in a remote application shows how, and how to pass a remote job trial task covers the next step.

What it pays

16 of the 57 jobs that name South Africa or Africa (28%) print pay. Across all 157 jobs open to South Africa, 25 (16%) do, because few of the worldwide jobs show pay.

Jobs open to South Africa that print pay, by currency

  • ZAR 23,000-25,000 a month10
  • ZAR 29,000-32,000 a month3
  • USD a year (senior IT)2
  • CAD a month (writing)1

  • Monthly in rand (13 listings, all from one employer): 23,000 to 25,000 ZAR a month for ten roles in data entry (5), customer service (3) and marketing (2). Three roles pay 29,000 to 32,000 ZAR: one in customer service, one senior data entry role and, unusually, one entry-level data entry role.
  • Monthly in Canadian dollars (1 listing): a writing role at 2,500 to 3,500 CAD a month.
  • Yearly in US dollars (2 listings): two senior IT roles at 150,000 to 200,000 and 150,000 to 250,000 USD a year.

The worldwide jobs pay differently again. Eight worldwide data annotation listings print hourly rates from 24 to 100 USD, and one senior IT role prints about 165,000 to 213,000 USD a year. Anyone can apply for these.

Because all the rand figures come from one employer, treat them as one employer's pay scale, not a market rate. Before you accept any offer, check the currency, whether pay is gross, how many hours a week it covers, and whether you would be an employee or a contractor who handles your own tax. For pay in every field, see our remote salaries page and what remote jobs pay.

Working hours

18 of the 57 jobs name a time zone, and 13 of those use South African time, all with the same hours: 11:00 to 19:00. That shift lines up with 9:00 to 17:00 in London while the UK is on winter time, so it suits teams in Europe and the UK.

The other five follow US or Indian time. A 9 to 5 shift in New York time runs from 15:00 to 23:00 in Johannesburg until 1 November 2026, and from 16:00 to midnight after the US clocks change. A 9 to 5 shift in Los Angeles time runs from 18:00 to 02:00, then 19:00 to 03:00. A 9 to 5 shift in India runs from 05:30 to 13:30.

South Africa does not change its clocks, so the gap to the US and Europe moves twice a year. Ask which hours you would work before you apply, and whether they change with the seasons.

What to do next

  1. Start with all jobs open to South Africa, then filter by field.
  2. Read listings that name South Africa first. Then add worldwide jobs in your field, knowing the competition is wider.
  3. Convert each listing's hours to South African time before you apply, especially for US roles.
  4. Learn one of the common tools well: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Zendesk or a CRM.
  5. Compare pay in the same unit. Turn every offer into rand per month, before tax, before you decide.
  6. Never pay a fee to get a job, and be careful with offers that move to chat apps. Read how remote job scams work and where you can work remotely from.
