The role
GitLab is hiring an Intermediate Backend Engineer (Python) in its Agent Foundations stage, which builds the platform for agentic AI features such as the Duo Agent Platform. The team works async-first across EMEA, AMER and India time zones.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain features in the Duo Workflow Service, the AI Gateway and the GitLab monolith
- Build agentic flows and reusable parts with LangChain and LangGraph, including the Flow Registry
- Design and review GraphQL and REST APIs used by the monolith, IDE extensions and Duo CLI
- Extend automated tests with pytest, including evaluations of agent and flow behavior
- Work with product, UX, frontend and AI specialists to ship in small iterations
- Join Tier 2 on-call rotations and help with root cause analysis
What they ask for
- Experience building production Python backend applications with APIs, background processing and data models
- Experience with LLM frameworks such as LangGraph, or shipping AI-powered backend features
- Skill designing REST, GraphQL or gRPC APIs with backward compatibility in mind
- Experience finding and fixing performance bottlenecks
- Clear written and verbal communication in a remote, async team
- Ruby on Rails, JavaScript or Vue familiarity is a plus
