The role
The company is hiring a Director of Engineering for Database Excellence, reporting to the VP of Data Engineering. The organization owns reliability, capacity and health of the company's datastores, mainly PostgreSQL, across the company.com, self-managed and Dedicated. You would lead three engineering managers.
What you will do
- Set direction and long-range plans for the database platform
- Own database capacity and availability outcomes for the company.com and report database risk to senior leadership
- Lead and coach three Engineering Managers and develop Staff-plus engineers into leaders
- Make cross-division technical decisions with Infrastructure, Product, Distribution, Support, Security and FinOps
- Own hiring, organization design, retention and performance management across regions
- Set quarterly OKRs and KPIs, manage the database infrastructure budget with FinOps, and act as escalation point for database incidents
What they ask for
- Experience leading managers of managers, including coaching newer managers
- Hands-on PostgreSQL experience at scale: capacity planning, upgrades, replication, performance, large production clusters
- Experience using data to make technical decisions and tie database investment to product outcomes
- Experience with software that customers run themselves, or with self-managed upgrade challenges
- Experience leading backend teams that own production infrastructure using SRE practices such as SLOs, on-call and incident management
- Clear written communication in an asynchronous, handbook-first company
- Experience leading globally distributed remote teams
