The role
Mural, a visual collaboration platform, is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer for its remote-first AI Foundations team. The role builds the backend systems behind Mural's AI agent platform, including orchestration, memory and evaluation.
What you will do
- Build core backend systems for the agent platform: orchestration, durable execution, tool execution, memory, observability and evaluation
- Design services and APIs that let AI agents retrieve context and run multi-step workflows reliably
- Develop the agent memory layer, covering conversation and product context, retrieval, summarization and compaction
- Build tooling to monitor and improve agent behavior through traces, metrics, feedback and offline evaluation
- Turn open-ended product needs into backend architectures, data models and plans
- Help set technical direction for agentic AI and mentor others
What they ask for
- 7+ years of software engineering building and operating reliable production systems and APIs
- Experience with distributed systems for complex workflows: asynchronous processing, retries, event-driven design, failure recovery
- Familiarity with LLM or agentic systems, such as tool use, context retrieval, evaluation or model orchestration
- Strong focus on observability, reliability, testing, security and incident response
- Clear technical writing and cross-team communication
- Full-stack experience or close work with frontend teams
- Deeper LLM evaluation, embeddings or retrieval experience is a plus
