The role
Coinbase is hiring a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for the Identity Verification team in its Platform group. The role owns the ML systems that decide whether a person, document and capture session are legitimate. Coinbase is remote-first with quarterly in-person sessions.
What you will do
- Own the identity verification ML stack: document authenticity, face match, liveness and deepfake or injection detection
- Build GNN-based identity-graph systems to detect synthetic-identity rings and coordinated fraud at onboarding
- Develop behavioral and device-intelligence models for session anomaly detection and bot-versus-human classification at real-time latency
- Benchmark vendor ML models against an in-house evaluation set and design routing across providers
- Lead and mentor engineers and align system design with ML Platform and Risk ML teams
What they ask for
- 8+ years deploying production ML systems at scale, with technical leadership across teams
- Domain experience in identity verification, biometrics or account integrity
- Applied ML depth in at least two of computer vision, GNNs, sequence models or NLP/LLMs
- Expert Python with production TensorFlow or PyTorch, including training, evaluation and serving
- Ability to turn KYC/AML requirements and fraud trends into ML roadmaps
- Clear communication of trade-offs to Product, Compliance, Risk and Security
- Willing to attend quarterly in-person sessions
