The role
Toast, a restaurant technology platform, is hiring a Staff/Senior Software Engineer for its Voice AI Platform team. The work is greenfield and open to US remote, or hybrid in Boston or New York.
What you will do
- Design, build and run resilient backend services and core components for the Voice AI platform
- Lead complex cross-team projects from design through production
- Make architecture decisions and define patterns that reduce complexity for dependent teams
- Build integrations with AI platforms and internal Toast systems
- Set up observability, monitoring and evaluation for AI-powered systems using production data
- Mentor engineers through code and design reviews
What they ask for
- 8+ years with object-oriented languages such as Java or Kotlin
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field
- Experience shipping AI-integrated features, including LLM nondeterminism, evaluation and cost management
- Experience owning mission-critical production services long term
- Track record leading multi-person, multi-team projects
- Deep knowledge of distributed systems, scalability and reliability
- Basic frontend familiarity; daily use of AI coding tools
- Voice or conversational AI experience is a plus
